Introduction
The ‘Green Revolution’ that happened in early 70’s took India from ‘begging bowl’ situation to the era of ‘self sufficiency’. India reached 308 million metric ton food production in 2021-22 from meager 50 million metric tons in 1950’s. This was possible only due to introduction of high yielding varieties and hybrids in rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, pearl millet and other crops like oil seed crops, vegetables, fibre crops etc.and also due to simultaneous adoption of modern agricultural methods. However, now the green revolution has been experiencing great fatigue. The food production has almost been flattened. No new genetics that can herald a second green revolution is forthcoming. Increasing the land under cultivation is summarily ruled out and indeed the land availability for agriculture is shrinking. At the same time the projected population of India by 2050 is 1.67 billion and hence the food production has to be almost doubled from less land, less water, less labor etc. Hence, scientists and policy makers are looking at all possible means to increase productivity of our crops, so that we will be able to produce more from less. One of the main possibilities is by reducing the losses due to pests and diseases. World overnearly 33% of the total produce is being lost to these pests and diseases. Hence by reducing this losses we can make that much more food available to people at an affordable price.

Dr. Vasanth Kumar – The founder

• Dr. Vasanth Kumar is one of the rarest scientists who has immense concern and commitment to the farming community. Even his Ph.D. thesis, which heralded a new era in thesis presentation in University of Mysore, is dedicated to the farming community. This speaks about his vision for the farmers from the student life itself. The very reason why he quit his most secured job in the coveted university also tells about his ability to take risk for the sake of others. He is of the opinion that Indian farmers need effective extension service from the government, knowledge about the latest information on integrated crop management that includes, soil, water, pest and disease management, in addition to market facility for their produce.  But, unfortunately the extension activities by the government agencies are not sufficient enough to cater to the need of the needy farmers.
